Behind this membrane awaits a nice portion of rāmen. Rāmen (ラーメン) is a noodle soup that consists of wheat noodles served in a meat or (sometimes) fish-based broth. It is often flavored with soy sauce or miso. Depending on the type of rāmen, toppings can be pork slices, nori (dried seaweed), menma (lacto-fermented bamboo shoots), scallions, and various other toppings.

Almost every region in Japan has its own variation of rāmen. The very famous tonkotsu rāmen (pork bone broth) of Kyushu or the miso rāmen from Hokkaido are examples of these regional variations.

Rāmen is one of the favorite foods of the Japanese people nowadays and is usually priced around 600-1,200 yen per bowl (around 4,68-9,72 euros). Tokyo alone contains around 5,000 rāmen shops, and there are more than 24,000 rāmen shops across Japan!
