Portrait of Bilderdijk

Portrait of Bilderdijk, sitting at the table, leaning on his right elbow, with his left hand on his side. There are books and papers lying on the table (among them ‘Homeri Opera’). Against the back wall there is a bookshelf partly covered by a curtain. This painting is part of Willem Bilderdijk’s estate. On Things That Talk, we can find not only this original, but a copy by the Dutch painter Moritz Calisch from around the middle of the 19th century as well. The text accompanying the original is part of the online zone on Things That Talk. This online exhibition is an initiative of Scaliger professor Rick Honings in collaboration with Leiden University Libraries and the Things That Talk Foundation on the occasion of Bilderdijk’s 265th birthday on 7 September 2021.
