If you look closer at the border of the yellow satin, you will notice a repeating pattern of birds. The bird that is depicted on the dress is a Red-crowned crane or Manchurian crane (丹頂鶴). These cranes are recognizable by the red patch on their crown and the black tail.Depending on the gender their neck, throat and cheeks will be black (male) or gray (female). In Chinese culture the Manchurian crane is one of the most common symbols for longevity due to the belief that they live for centuries.[Cf, p 119]
