The box
This box of clothes reminds her of the loved ones who are no longer with her. She vividly recalls that day. It was early in the morning, and she had just gotten out of bed. She checked her phone messages and saw a text from her ex-husband. The worst feeling in the world crawled up to her heart, worse than the boat ride to Greece, worse than the first night in Germany, and worse than all of the refugee centers. She couldn't believe what she was reading and rushed to wake Fardin up. Regardless of how many times Fardin said it was fake news, Haide says she could 'feel it in her heart' that something wasn't right. And it was true. Her sister's husband had been there earlier that morning and had shot her parents in cold blood. Haide discovered that two of her sisters had also been murdered at the house that day, and her daughter, Edrina, had been shot four times and was critically injured. She made it out alive, but she will not be able to use her body normally again.
Haide traveled to meet her sisters in Turkey a year after the loss of her family members. This is when she received the box of clothes. She had asked her sisters to bring a piece of clothing from each of her family members, something that would remind her of them every day from that point on. Every day when Haide wakes up, the first thing she does is take the clothes out of the box and smell them. It conjures up images of the loved ones she sorely misses. Haide does not even have to open her eyes to know whose clothes she is holding. Everything is in the scent! In that small box, she retains all of her memories of her parents and sisters. A shirt, a scarf, a dress, and a Kurdish waist-shawl.
